Introduction to Kinnaur District

Kinnaur, HimachalKinnaur is located on the Indo-Tibet border with Tibet spread along its eastern side. Being a wholly mountainous region of high altitude, it is sparsely populated having only 77 villages scattered in the valleys. About 80 kilometres in length and 65 kilometers in breadth this secluded region has its roots going as far back as the Vedic times. The apples, chilgoza and other dry fruits are grown here are world famous. The high terrain here give way to great adventures sports of all kinds. Beautiful trekking routes includes the 'Parikarma of Kinner Kailash'. Here is also the Beautiful Nako lake and three famous wild life sanctuaries.

Altitude: high altitude district, varies from 2000 mts.and above.

Temperature: cold. Winter temperature can be well below zero.

Clothing: heavy woolen in winter, light woolen or thick cotton in summers.

Strongly recommended: Walking shoes with good grip, walking sticks.

Reaching there

Air: Shimla, the nearest air link is 200 kms away.

Road: NH 22 runs through the district up to Spiti. Good network but narrow and winding roads.

Rail: Nearest railhead is Shimla.

Places of interest: Dotted with natural beauty, high peaks and deep valleys. Baspa Valley, Sangla, Chitkul (the last and the highest village), Rekongpeo, Kalpa from where the spectacular peaks of Kinner Kailash can be seen.

Accommodation: HPPWD, HPSEB and Forest rest houses at Sangla, Rikongpeo, Chitkul, and Rakchham.

 Prior booking is necessary. To be done from Shimla. A few privately run hotels and guest houses are also available.
