War Memorial

War Memorial, DharamsalaA memorial made of three huge panels of black marble. The names of those men of Himachal Pradesh who gave their lives in various wars are etched in these panels. In the thick of pines, it is an eye-catcher. It is one of the major attractions of Dharamsala, the War Memorial reminds us of the post independence war heroes of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. These martyrs lost their lives in the Indo-China war of 1962, the Indo-Pak wars of 1947, 1965 and 1971 as well as the UN peace operations.

Surrounded by landscaped gardens and poetic little paths, you are led to the Memorial by a storybook pine trail. This place is a memorial for the Himachali Martyrs who fell while defending our motherland during wars with Pakistan and China. The War Memorial was set up to commemorate the soldiers who fought for India in post independent India and a lot of thought has been put into its creation. For example, the wall of the memorial is curved, signifying the continuity of life and the fact that these great soldiers will immortal in the minds of Indians forever.

Three huge panels of black marble are etched with the names of those martyrs who laid down their lives guarding the motherland in the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971 and in various peacekeeping missions, bearing testimony to their supreme sacrifices.

A little cafe near the Memorial serves snacks and refreshments and right next door is another beautiful structure, the GPC College that's well worth a visit! Make a trip to the Memorial, if for nothing else, than for the sense of pride one feels at standing at a Memorial of such brave men. The entry fee is Rs. 5/- per person.
